You’ve made the decision.
You’re going to do it.
There’s no holding you back.
You want to start a blog. And nothing’s gonna stop you now.
But… what’s your blog going to be about? What can YOU write about on a regular basis? What are you going to call your blog? Are you really sure you want to do this?
If you answered, “Um…” to any of those questions, maybe you should ease back off the gas pedal for a minute and have a long hard think about all this. It’s easy enough to set yourself up with WordPress or any number of other blogging platforms that are out there.
Heck, if all you’re planning to do is keep an online diary that your friends and family can check out from time to time you could even just set yourself up with a MySpace profile and post your blog on there. That way you don’t have to worry about paying for hosting, choosing a domain name, or trying to get indexed by Google.
But, if you’re serious about doing it and you’ve got a particular subject in mind that you want to write about then you’ll want to go that little bit further and put some real effort into it.
So, sit down and ask yourself seriously, “What’s my niche?” Because unless you actually are Kevin Smith it’s unlikely that very many people will want to read about your boring-ass life. And if no-one’s coming by to read your blog you’re never going to achieve the dream of being able to work in your PJ’s.
“Fame costs and right here’s where you start paying - in sweat”
You’ve got a lot of hard work ahead of you. But if you can start with a decent plan it’ll make it a lot easier down the line. So think about what you want to do. Consider what interests you. Then consider whether or not it’ll interest anyone else. THEN consider whether anyone else is already doing exactly the same thing (yes, I know I’m hardly one to talk considering how many other SEO blogs there are in the world, but I have my reasons and while this blog is proving to be great practice for me, if it never gets near the front page of Google that won’t be the end of the world, I’m more concerned with taking what I learn from making this site and gaining higher rankings for my clients’ sites).
Still reading? Good.
Once you’ve decided on what you’re going to blog about the next step will be to decide on a domain name and find yourself a hosting provider so that your blog has somewhere to live on the internet. And that’s what we’re going to cover in the next post.
Thanks for stopping by. See you real soon.
